As reported originally by Variety.com, voice actor Robert Papenbrook passed away at the age of 50 on March 17th from a chronic lung condition. A funeral service was held on the 24th with over 200 people attending to honor the legendary actor.
Odds are you have seen or heard Bob before. Anime fan or not. Casual dub listener or hardcore dub enthusiast. Someone who has turned on a television, put in a movie, or played a video game; odds are you have seen or heard him before. Bob Papenbrook has been an active actor on camera and in the recording booth since 1982 with a career so busy he even stopped bothering to keep track of all of the characters he’s voiced over the years. Tenchi Muyo!, Digimon, Heat Guy J, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Power Rangers, V.R. Troopers, Jeepers Creepers 2, Warcraft III, Robotech: The Game, Heroes of Might & Magic VI and VII, ER, JAG, Birds of Prey, Xena, Charmed, Boston Public, In the Heat of the Night, Hunter, the list goes on for far more than any online database will ever be able to completely name off.
Our condolensces go out to Debbie Rothstein, their son Bryce, and the rest of the Papenbrook family. Bob will be greatly missed.
Last December, word came that 4Kids was losing the rights to Pokemon, and that license owner Pokemon USA would be handling the dubbing of the new episodes themselves. While castmembers initially believed they would be continuing their roles, both Eric Stuart and Veronica Taylor have now gone out saying that they’ve been replaced, and that the upcoming 10th aniversary special will feature an all new cast.
I was reminded the other day that people actually like to know how old sites are from time to time. So then, on Feb, 21st, 2002 this site posted its first database entry with Original Dirty Pair. We’ve managed to make a pretty big dent in the industry with actual research title to title in the time we’ve been around. And we are still moving forward as we continue to update and upgrade the database four years later.
Yes, I am over a month past due on mentioning this. I can remember my girlfriend’s birthday but not that of a project which has consumed much of my time & money these past four years. Not to mention the countless hours donated by the rest of the staff and contributors over the years, too. Go figure. But at least you guys & gals won’t make me “sleep on the couch” because of it. 😉
Some of you may have noticed the “
” icon appearing in some of our entries recently. Well, it’s part of a new feature we’ve added – mp3 sound clips from the dubs so you can listen to them and decide for yourself what you think of it. Just click on the icon, and a list of the clips available for that character will pop up.
Most notable are clips from the dubs of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Millennium Actress. These dubs were produced for the UK releases, and are not available in the US. Other titles with clips include:
We hope to add more soon.
In their website lounge area, Geneon’s Kevin Chu hinted at two new licenses due to be released in June. The two are widely believed to be Kamichu! and Ichigo Mashimaro, which CrystalAcids has learned are being dubbed by New Generation Pictures and The Ocean Group / Blue Water Studios respectively.
Also soon to be released by Geneon, Elemental Gelade is being worked on by Ocean Studios.
