What if… Ocean dubbed Ghost in the Shell TV?

If you will recall an earlier report referring to comments from Epcar and several other sources, The Ocean Group was working on a Ghost in the Shell property that was believed to be the Solid State Society movie. Well, it was close. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man cuts down the first GitS:SAC TV season into a 2 hour OVA and features a brand new cast from The Ocean Group.

Now before you go grabbing your pitchforks, keep in mind that The Laughing Man is a (greatly) shortened version of Season 1. So, you’re not losing your original English cast for an entirely new addition to the Ghost in the Shell saga. Instead, you gain an interesting second look at Season 1 and something on DVD that isn’t just TV episodes with a few new lines of dialogue added. The Laughing Man hits stores October 2nd in a 2-Disc set.

VIZ Media debuted the DVD across North America on September 4. NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW is a theatrical side story based on the continuity of the massively popular NARUTO animated TV series. Nielsen VideoScan collects sell-through POS (consumer purchase) sales data weekly from traditional channels of video distribution including mass merchants, audio/video and video specialty retailers, electronics outlets, grocery stores, drug stores, and some Internet sites. Nielsen VideoScan maintains this weekly POS data in one of the largest databases of VHS and DVD products in the country.

NARUTO is now one of the most popular and successful manga and anime properties in North America. The general storyline of both the NARUTO manga and animated series depicts the adventures of a young boy named Uzumaki Naruto who trains to become a ninja. Naruto, cursed with the spirit of the nine-tailed fox demon sealed within his body, is forced to live a bullied life discriminated against by his fellow villagers. But Naruto is resilient and undaunted and his determination often inspires those around him. Through the adventures, the young ninja learns the importance of friendship, teamwork, loyalty, hard work, creativity, ingenuity and right vs. wrong.

In NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW, Naruto and his team are sent on a mission to guard Yukie Fujikaze, a popular actress starring in the hit movie “The Adventures of Princess Gale.” The crew is heading toward the Land of Snow, a land forever covered in snow, to shoot the final scenes of the film. When Yukie refuses to go and escapes from the set, she is brought back by force by Naruto and his teammates. But little do they know there are three rogue Snow Ninja lying in wait with a sinister purpose that forces Yukie to make a crucial decision and face her hidden past.

“The NARUTO brand has been passionately embraced by a truly diverse fan base and the impressive debut of the DVD of NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW validates the continued popularity of the property,” states Gonzalo Ferreyra, Vice President, Sales, VIZ Media. “The special theatrical screenings of this film last summer drew enthusiastic responses from thousands who attended. As VIZ Media continues to bring new NARUTO anime and manga products to domestic shores, we look forward to audiences discovering these new stories. ADV/Geneon strategic alliance called off

The ADV/Geneon deal that would have placed sales, marketing, and distribution of Geneon’s titles in ADV’s hands has been called off between the two companies. The press releases from ADV and Dentsu (Geneon’s Japanese parent company) don’t reveal many details other than the deal has been called off, but that won’t stop the rampant speculation this weekend by fans. Over the past couple of weeks Geneon has been letting go of its sales and marketing staff so the company will have to decide something soon as ADV was set to take control as of Oct. 1st.

Oh! And if someone sees Stephen Tang wandering around, tell him to email in. I’m not through with our Alba VS Kardashian conversation just yet. ;)

VIZ Pictures will open DEATH NOTE and DEATH NOTE: THE LAST NAME in a series of special screenings at Austin’s Fantastic Fest 2007, September 20-27, and at the 2007 Vancouver Asian Film Festival, November 1-4.

Theater information follows at the end of this release and future screenings will continue throughout 2008. VIZ Pictures also plans to release DEATH NOTE and DEATH NOTE: THE LAST NAME on DVD in the summer of 2008.

DEATH NOTE is based on the hit supernatural action mystery manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The live-action film, directed by Shusuke Kaneko, known as a director of popular monster film “Gamera” series, was released in 2006 and mirrors the manga’s story of Light Yagami, an ace student with great prospects who is bored out of his mind. All of that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god named Ryuk. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals mysteriously begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to investigate, and he is soon hot on the trail of Light, who must now reevaluate his one noble goal. Both Light and L believe themselves to be on the side of justice, and the two match wits trying to show exactly which of them is “good” and which of them is “evil.”

The film’s sequel, DEATH NOTE: THE LAST NAME, was a hit in Japan, staying #1 for four straight weeks. While it closely followed major plot elements from the original manga series, several new key story differences were also introduced. Both films star Takeshi Kaga, who is widely known by North American audiences as the flamboyant host of TV’s Iron Chef.

The 24-episode anime, also known as “The Third - Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo,”

Spanning more than 16 volumes, the original fiction has appeared in Japan’s Dragon Magazine since 1999, alongside the serialized novels that inspired the hit Full Metal Panic! and Slayers anime series.

Additionally, a manga adaptation of The Third - which is scheduled for a

2008 North American release by TOKYOPOP - ran in Dragon Age magazine, home to the Full Metal Panic!, Slayers and Chrono Crusade manga.

XEBEC (D.N.Angel, Negima!, Fafner, Elemental Gelade) produced the animation for the TV series, which ran on Japan’s WOWOW satellite channel - known for original anime programming such as Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, The Big O and Paranoia Agent - from April through October of 2006.

Blissfully unaware of the danger lying ahead, she’s busy tracking sand dragons and dealing with an unexpected visitor, Paife.
