Nation¹s Largest Convention Teams Up with Sony Pictures Entertainment

Anaheim, California (May 29, 2007) TEKKONKINKREET director Michael Arias is the latest addition to the hottest line up of Anime Expo® 2007 Guests of Honors for the highly anticipated 2007 convention June 29-July 2 at the Long Beach Convention Center. More information can be found on the website <http://www.anime-expo.org> . TEKKONKINKREET is Arias¹ feature film directing debut and will be screened at Anime Expo® 2007 in 35 mm format on [date/time]. TEKKONKINKREET, the first feature-length anime film written and directed by American filmmakers, will release in limited theatres on July 13. In TEKKONKINKREET, Michael Arias smoothly translates the unconventional work of popular “underground” manga artist Taiyo Matsumoto into a dynamic feature-length animated film. In the opening scene, a raven ominously soars across Tokyo’s vast skies before diving down to saunter along the streets of a ramshackle old neighborhood. Good and evil play out mesmerizingly to the tune of progress, in the guise of real estate development. Originally published serially in the manga magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 1993, the story revolves around two uncompromising street urchinsone of whom possesses magical powers and can be found in startling positions (atop telephone poles, for example, looking for lurking adult oppressors).Michael Arias began his filmmaking career more than 20 years ago at Dream Quest Images, where he worked as a motion-control cameraperson on effects-heavy films such as THE ABYSS and TOTAL RECALL. Arias then worked under director Douglas Trumbull as Ride Programmer for Universal Studios¹ BACK TO THE FUTURE, THE RIDE, which to this day remains the gold standard in immersive entertainment. Mr. Arias then moved to Japan, first to post-production monolith Imagica, and then to game giant Sega, where he co-directed the ridefilm MEGALOPOLICE, exhibited as part of the SIGGRAPH

1993 Electronic Theater. In 1992 Mr. Arias co-founded CG animation boutique Syzygy Digital Cinema, where he created sequences for feature films M.

BUTTERFLY, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, PRET-A-PORTER, and the Spike Lee films CROOKLYN and CLOCKERS. At 3D-animation software innovator Softimage Co., Mr.

Arias developed and patented the Toon Shaders, software for combining traditional animation and computer graphics. Mr. Arias has worked closely with the animation staff of Dreamworks and Studio Ghibli to add a distinct visual flavor to the films PRINCE OF EGYPT, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO, and Miyazaki¹s masterpieces THE PRINCESS MONONOKE, and SPIRITED AWAY. Most recently, Mr. Arias produced Warner Bros¹ Matrix-inspired animation anthology ANIMATRIX.

Michael Arias joins Tetsuro Araki, Minori Chihara, Yuko Goto, Aya Hirano, Eisaku Inoue, Masaru Kitao, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and ORESKABAND as Anime Expo® 2007 Official Guests of Honor.

Heero & Mr. Joker: At World’s End

These are more of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-them type of thing, but it seems like everyone will be seeing Pirates this weekend so you may as well try. With the power out due to the heavy rain last night, I made my way to the air conditioned local theater to catch the third Pirates movie: At World’s End. You can imagine my surprise to see Mark Hildreth credited as a “Cryer” and J.B. Blanc as a “Clerk” in the film. I believe Blanc’s scene is when Gov. Swann (Jonathan Pryce) is signing the execution orders, but I’m foggy on when there was a town cryer in the movie.

The fourth and final volume of the To Heart anime will be available in two variations: a disc-only edition and a limited-edition with exclusive, collectible art box. Designed to house all four volumes of this fan-favorite series, the art box will be strictly limited to a one-time run of 1500 pieces and also include a numbered “certificate of authenticity.” To Heart, DVD Vol. 4 features episodes 11-13, plus the final two “mini” episodes (”omake”) featured on the Japanese DVD release.

* “charming” - Underland Online

* “the warmth of the animation just seems to shine through” - AnimeOnDVD.com

* “anime any shoujo fan will enjoy” - Active Anime

Based on one of Japan’s most popular games, To Heart follows childhood friends Akari and Hiroyuki, and their classmates, as they deal with life’s everyday - and not-so-everyday - dramas. This tale of love, relationships and friendship has been a fan favorite since its 1999 Japanese television debut. Perceptive American fans may recognize the series from its numerous “cameos” in the best-selling Comic Party anime.

Available to U.S. audiences for the first time ever, Right Stuf’s release of To Heart features a complete video restoration of the entire 13-episode series.

In To Heart, DVD Vol. 4: Love and Truth:

Episode 11: “A Warm Gaze”

Multi has proven herself to be more than just a robot-she’s an irreplaceable friend. But soon, she’ll have to return to the lab, and if she isn’t up to their standards, she’ll be scrapped! Can Hiroyuki and Akari teach her how to be a proper maid before her time is up?

Episode 12: “The Season of Emotions”

Christmas is coming, and Shiho’s usually excited about it. But this year, something’s different. Shiho seems quiet and withdrawn-not at all like her usual boisterous self. Her thoughts keep drifting to the past, to when she first met Hiroyuki…

Episode 13: “On a Day of Snow”

Akari, Shiho, Hiroyuki and Masashi have been friends for a very long time. But as close as they are, there are words that have been left unsaid. As the days wind down to Shiho’s Christmas get-together, the time has finally come for true feelings to be spoken.

Special Mini Episode 5

What do robot maids do in their spare time? They get jobs at a bookstore, of course!

Special Mini Episode 6

All the world’s a stage, and the To Heart cast merely players! But why is Serika’s butler wearing a pink cat suit…?

Naruto Vs Spider-Man

No, it’s not the upcoming box office battle between Peter Parker and Naruto Uzumaki… we all know that the webslinger’s box office sales domination will not be threatened by Naruto’s one day box office draw. Instead, it’s far.. far… far more dangerous. The Rabbids are back! Ubisoft’s Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii + other platforms) poked fun at several characters including Superman and Ubisoft’s own Splinter Cell series. Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (Wii) will include mini games featuring Rabbids dressed as (you guessed it) Spider-Man and Naruto. You can see a video of the two heroes battling it out carrying burgers (crime fighting doesn’t pay that well, I guess) and running in a rodeo on GameTrailers.com. While you’re there, you should probably also check out the Rabbids 2 parody teaser based on upcoming box office movie Transformers.

Bribes, Package Stuffing, or Revenge?

When FUNimation sent out the Samurai 7 DVD to reviewers, they included a very nice (small) sword on a stand. (I don’t have one nor did I get the DVD to review, so I can’t show any pictures. I hear it’s nice, though.) In fact, it’s common for some websites and magazines (not this one, mind you) to get lots of fancy little bonus items to help intice the person to review the title sooner, be nicer, or whatever else to get some publicity for the DVD. Where am I going with this? (more…)

UTAWARERUMONO

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

“ADV May Have a Sleeper Hit for 2007 on Their Hands…”

– Advanced Media Network

From veteran production studio Oriental Light and Magic (Berserk, Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor) comes the tale of a man in a mask he can’t remove.  With a heart-felt story and exciting action set in a far-off land, Utawarerumono will appeal to fans of Inuyasha.  Make sure to get your dose of action and intrigue in what J-Ent calls, “A Riveting Must-See Series.”

Synopsis: On a strange and foreboding journey where evil attacks at every turn, Emperor Hakuoro finds that freedom comes at the expense of moral convictions.  As war continues to rage across the land, Hakuoro must summon his inner demon and confront the atrocity head-on.  Meanwhile, another masked stranger takes an unsolicited interest in Hakuoro – but he is too busy fending off romantic advances, trying to save face with Eluluu and searching for the truth about his past.  This exciting installment of Utawarerumono has it all: bloodshed, burning, death, destruction, redemption and resurrection.  Add to that a cute mythological creature, a mysterious voyage and  a drunken tryst or two – and you’re in for a frenetic and fantastic adventure!

Utawarerumono: The Price of Freedom (SRP $29.98 DVD) is a DVD-only release including episodes 15 through 18, presented in both English 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 with English subtitles.  Extras include the 15 minute video “Utawarerumono: The Story So Far…”, extended episode previews, a character art gallery, a glossary of terms, plus clean opening animation, clean closing animation and previews of upcoming ADV Films releases.
